What does a Cloud Data Architect do?
A Cloud Data Architect designs the structure through which enterprise data is collected, integrated, stored, governed, transformed, shared, and consumed in cloud environments.
The right hire depends on whether your biggest constraint is architecture, implementation, governance, analytics, or platform operation. Decide that before you write the job description.
Responsibilities
The role connects source systems to the people and systems that use data for reporting, analytics, data science, machine learning, applications, and AI.
At principal level, the architect typically defines not only individual solutions but also the patterns and standards that many data teams follow.
Define the target-state data architecture
Determine how data should move from operational systems into cloud data platforms and how the platform should support downstream workloads.
That may include:
- Data warehouses
- Data lakes
- Lakehouses
- Streaming platforms
- Operational data stores
- Semantic layers
- Data products
- Data sharing
- AI and ML workloads
Establish reusable architecture patterns
Define standards for ingestion, transformation, data modeling, orchestration, storage, access, quality, lineage, observability, and lifecycle management.
The goal is to prevent every engineering team from inventing an incompatible data architecture.
Design governance and security into the platform
Establish how sensitive information is classified, who can access it, how lineage is captured, how quality is measured, and how controls remain consistent as the environment scales.
Current Databricks architecture guidance explicitly treats unified data and AI governance, security, data quality, interoperability, and usability as architectural concerns rather than add-on administrative functions.
Connect data architecture to analytics and AI
Make sure the architecture supports the way data will actually be consumed.
That increasingly includes traditional BI alongside machine learning, semantic search, RAG, AI agents, feature engineering, unstructured data, and governed AI access.
A current BlackRock Snowflake Data Architect opening, for example, combines enterprise data modeling, Snowflake architecture, governance, security, analytics, and AI-ready data patterns such as embeddings, semantic search, RAG, and unstructured-data processing.
How is a Cloud Data Architect different from similar roles?
Titles overlap significantly.
The right hire depends on whether the biggest constraint is architecture, implementation, governance, analytics, or platform operation.
| Role | Primary focus | Typical outputs | Core strengths | When to hire |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud Data Architect | Enterprise data structure and platform direction | Target architecture, data models, standards, governance patterns, integration designs | Cloud, Snowflake/Databricks, modeling, integration, governance | When data needs to be organized coherently across teams and workloads |
| Data Engineer | Building and operating data pipelines | Pipelines, transformations, ingestion jobs, data products | SQL, Python, Spark, ETL/ELT, orchestration | When architecture is defined and implementation capacity is the constraint |
| Data Platform Engineer | Operating the shared data platform | Platform automation, environments, CI/CD, observability, compute | Cloud, IaC, DevOps, data platforms | When platform reliability and self-service infrastructure need improvement |
| Analytics Engineer | Transforming data for analytical use | dbt models, semantic datasets, reporting layers, metrics | SQL, dbt, modeling, BI requirements | When trusted analytical datasets and metrics are the primary need |
| Data Governance Architect / Lead | Data policy, metadata, access, lineage, stewardship | Governance models, classifications, controls, metadata standards | Governance, privacy, lineage, policy | When governance is the dominant challenge |
| Enterprise Architect ↗ | Organization-wide technology strategy | Cross-domain standards, capability models, technology roadmaps | Applications, data, infrastructure, business architecture | When the problem extends significantly beyond data |
| AI / Data Architect | Architecture specifically supporting AI and ML | AI-ready data platforms, retrieval architectures, governed AI data products | Data architecture plus ML/AI patterns | When data architecture is being driven primarily by AI use cases |
Do you actually need a Cloud Data Architect?
Hire a Cloud Data Architect when your organization repeatedly faces questions such as:
- Should we use a warehouse, lakehouse, or combination?
- Should Snowflake or Databricks become the primary platform?
- How should data domains and schemas be organized?
- Which data should be centralized and which should remain federated?
- How should batch, streaming, APIs, and CDC fit together?
- How do we establish trusted enterprise data models?
- How should data lineage and quality be managed?
- How do we secure sensitive data without blocking analytics?
- How should data be organized for AI and RAG?
- How do we prevent every team from building its own incompatible pipeline?
- How do we migrate legacy warehouses without reproducing the same architecture in the cloud?
- How do we balance platform performance with cloud cost?
If the architecture is already well defined and the primary challenge is building pipelines, hire a Data Engineer.
If platform automation, environment reliability, or infrastructure operations are the constraint, consider a Data Platform Engineer.
If the organization lacks clear ownership, stewardship, classifications, and governance processes more than it lacks technical architecture, a Data Governance leader may be needed alongside the architect.
